Dear Residents of House District 108,
The Second Session of the 124th Maine State Legislature began its work Wednesday, January 6th, 2010. This is the short session designed to deal with only "emergency" legislation. There are 88 bills that were carried over from the First Session and an additional 247 bills that have been approved for introduction by the Legislative Council, who must review each bill to determine if it meets with the "emergency" requirement.
Over the coming weeks, these bills will be worked by one of the 17 standing policy committees, with statutory adjournment set for April 21, 2010. However, leadership has set the goal of completing our work by the end of March. As you all know, the majority of our time will be spent reworking the current biennium state budget, looking to cover the anticipated revenue shortfall of $438.4 million dollars. These cuts will not be easy or done without in depth thought and analysis, causing us all to rethink how best to effectively and efficiently deliver essential state services.
As the long days of winter and cold settle in, I also want to remind everyone about the importance of keeping an eye out for your neighbors. No one should be cold in their own home. For winter energy tips and financial resource options please click here.
I will do my very best to keep you informed on these issues and more over the legislative session. Also, please feel free to be in touch with me anytime with questions or concerns. The best way to reach me during session is via e-mail.
Thank you for the honor of representing you in Augusta.
Cordially,

Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess
State House Representative District 108
